About This Database

Academic Video Online (AVON) provides unlimited access to more than 70,000 videos, including documentaries, interviews, field recordings, and films for classroom instruction. All of the videos have closed captioning available, as well as running transcripts. Users can email videos, embed them into Canvas, and create clips.

*IMPORTANT: Always follow this path to the database! There as is a free version with  limited full content.  Ensure the the Widener University Logo is always in the upper right corner.

 

NOTE: To access this and other subscription databases from off campus, you will be asked to enter your Widener username and password.

 

 

Searching Academic Video Online (AVON)

1 - Search for a Keyword or Phrase

Below is an example of the AVON Advanced Search interface.  Notice that the logo for Wolfgram Memorial Library is at the top left corner of the interface.  Once you choose your keywords, you can enter them in the search bar as shown in the example for "pandemics."

2 - Review & Filter Results

This interface shows that there are 896 results for the search term "pandemics," but many of these are audio files.  The best way to filter your results to only video is to use the Document Type filter "Film" that is highlighted below with a red rectangle.  Document Type is only one of the available filters that you can use to refine your results.  Common filters are Publication Date and Language.

NOTE: As all videos have English captions enabled, you can turn on the Closed Captions for a foreign-language video.

Accessing Video Using AVON

Once you have selected a video from your results list, you can click on the title of the video to open the AVON player.  The player gives viewers the ability to play, pause, rewind, and fast forward.  It also allows for advanced features, such as closed captioning and full audio transcripts.  Using the "Embed" tab will give a viewer the ability to embed the video on any webpage that supports HTML.
