Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Information Literacy

A guide for thinking critically about the use of generative artificial intelligence tools by applying information literacy skills

APA Style - Citing Generative AI

Reference citation example:

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

Parenthetical citation example:  (OpenAI, 2023)

Narrative citation example:  OpenAI (2023)

Citing a chat session transcript

Because the results of a chat with a Gen AI tool such as ChatGPT are not retrievable by others, you may wish to include a transcript of your chat session as an appendix to your research paper.  Include a reference list citation (such as the example above) and also create a parenthetical citation following this example:

(OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript)

For more information, see the APA Style blog post  "How to Cite ChatGPT"

MLA Style - Citing Generative AI

Works Cited citation example:

“In 200 words, describe the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby” follow-up prompt to list sources. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 9 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.

Parenthetical citation example:

When asked to describe the symbolism of the green light in The Great GatsbyChatGPT provided a summary about optimism, the unattainability of the American dream, greed, and covetousness. However, when further prompted to cite the source on which that summary was based, it noted that it lacked “the ability to conduct research or cite sources independently” but that it could “provide a list of scholarly sources related to the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby” (“In 200 words”).

Chicago Style - Citing Generative AI

Example of a numbered footnote or endnote:

1. ChatGPT, response to “Explain how to make pizza dough from common household ingredients,” OpenAI, March 7, 2023.

If you’re using author-date instead of notes, any information not in the text would be placed in a parenthetical text reference. For example:

(ChatGPT, March 7, 2023).

AMA Style - Citing Generative AI

The AMA Manual of Style has not provided specific guidelines for how to cite generative AI.  Follow the rules for citing a nonrecoverable unpublished source.

Reference list citation example:

As an unpublished source, generative AI should not be included in the Reference List.  Instead, include an Acknowledgement after the Reference List that describes the AI tool, what you did, and the date accessed.

Acknowledgement example:

I acknowledge the use of [insert AI tool name and URL] in the preparation and/or writing of this document on [date accessed].  I have used [insert AI tool name] to assist with [research, idea generation, clarifying, structure/organization, writing, and/or other].

Parenthetical citation example:

(Name of AI Tool, type of communication, Month DD, YYYY)

(ChatGPT, response to question from author, April 06, 2023)
